The match race, truly a test of superiority over the years.  For those of you unacquainted with the term match race, allow me to give you a brief explanation.  A match race consists of two parties, in this case horses, going head-to-head, with bragging rights and usually a good size purse at stake.  To make this more interesting, we at Del Mar have provided links so you can watch these historic match races.

5.  Numero cinco as our neighbors to the South say is the epic, "Battle of the Sexes."  This match took place right here at Del Mar as the two-leading jockeys, Julie Krone and Patrick Valenzuela, battled it out atop three year old colts.  WALKER_INSERT LINK HERE,DID THAT GET YOUR ATTENTION?

4.  Who-Dey!  Who- Dey!  That's all I need to say about this battle between man and beast.  For those of you who aren't Cincinnati Bengal fans, this is the race where Mr. Ocho Cinco, Bengal wide receiver Chad Johnson, races a horse for charity at River Downs.

3.  Del Mar's most famous match race of all time, maybe not all time, but it was entertaining nonetheless.  Mule racing's Secretariat, Black Ruby, races Taz to conclude a day at the races at the seaside track.  Since their both half horse we can count this as horse race, right?

2.  The World Record Challenge had to be included in the top-three.  This race took place in Santa Anita when the Thoroughbred 4 1/2 F world record holder, Valiant Pete, battled the Quarterhorse 880 yd world record holder, Griswold.  Once again proving the superiority of.......

1.  And now, the moment we've all been waiting for, cue drum roll.  This race put Del Mar on the map, the classic Seabiscuit vs. Ligaroti.  A great race that with a finish that can best be described as a boxing match on horseback, literally.
